FCO’s Sri Lanka travel advice divides opinion

Story: FCO advises against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka The UK government should be evacuating people already in Sri Lanka. Look what happened in Tunisia.

RACHEL LAUDER

A quite stunning overreaction by the FCO. According to MI5, the alert status for the UK is ‘severe’, meaning a terrorist attack is highly likely. Imagine the damage to our inbound industry if every country in the world changed its advice for travel to the UK because of this.

Credit to Riviera for overcoming Jet crisis

I have just returned from a tour of India and Nepal with Riviera Travel and wish to commend its service. During our trip, Jet Airways cancelled five of our planned flights, but the Riviera team worked hard to ensure we got where we needed to be.

QUOTE OF THE

Andy Harmer @UKAndyHarmer (Clia) Huge congrats to [Saga’s] @IainEPowell for his Young Travel Manager of the Year Award at #JMGhalloffame – richly deserved

“The broader criticism is that travel tech firms over-promise, under- deliver and, in some instances, dare I

say it, downright lie about what is available.”

2 May 2019travelweekly.co.uk17 APD is a damaging, indiscriminate tax

Story: Scottish air tax cut delay condemned by agents There is little doubt that there would be more services to UK airports from more places were it not for APD. Simple price elasticity suggests the higher the price, the lower the demand. However, an indiscriminate tax on everyone that flies, including our inbound visitors, speaks to “the UK being open for business” as an empty political epithet only.

Cook’s situation is not like Monarch’s

Story: Speculation mounts over potential bidders for Thomas Cook Thomas Cook and Monarch are different situations. Monarch was not profitable and was likely heading for large losses with a hugely difficult turnaround at the then exchange rates [it folded in October 2017]. Even without any debt, Monarch, in my opinion, would have struggled to make a profit in the years to come. Thomas Cook, on the negative side, overexpanded, using cashflow to expand and buy business, and borrowed heavily. It never strengthened its balance sheet to a significantly higher level. The main difference between Monarch and Thomas Cook is that Thomas Cook, with a bit of reorganising and without its debt, looks as if it could make a decent profit. That said, left as it is, Thomas Cook has some serious debts to pay back, so something will have to change.

NICK COOPER Travel Weekly welcomes a response from Thomas Cook
