Kate’s pain tells our industry’s story NOTES FROM THE EDITOR
If those in government needed any proof of the immense personal toll this pandemic is taking on the industry, they should watch Inspired Travel’s Kate Harris on one of our Travel Weekly webcasts this week (page 4). Kate’s raw emotion and brutal honesty about the situation she now faces is hard to watch, and I’ll admit it was also hard at times to keep the discussion going given her obvious distress. But she was insistent that we carry on and publish the webcast to show others that they are not alone and to continue to try to get the message through to those with the power to help.
Hopes for bespoke support were dealt a double blow by the chancellor this week, with news of an APD increase following the announcement of a Job Support Scheme that fails to offer any realistic assistance to travel firms (page 4). And as if this wasn’t enough for the trade to contend with, we also report on warnings from agents and experts for businesses to beware of fraudsters taking advantage of the pandemic to target small firms (page 6). We have all been urged to Stay Alert over recent months. It seems agents must now employ that mantra to protect themselves from yet another threat.

travelweekly.co.uk will already be aware of our decision to postpone our flagship Globe Travel Awards from January 2021 to 2022. We are desperately disappointed
we won’t be able to bring our industry together for its traditional start to the year, but it is the right decision to make. Alongside the practical barriers
to running an event of this scale, we are also mindful of the immense challenges facing you all, and do not wish to distract focus from your businesses in any way. The Globes will return on
January 14, 2022, and will be more spectacular than ever. In the meantime, we will continue
