here can be few venues romanticised more than the traditional pub. The image of roaring fires, good company,
great drinks and hearty meals are all the more appealing as we head into the colder autumn and winter months. This great bastion of hospitality is as extolled as much among industry insiders as the wider public, and last week saw the opening of the Devonshire in London’s Soho from Oisín Rogers, Charlie Carroll and Ash- ley Palmer-Watts after a decade of dreaming and deliberation about what made a pub “warm, welcoming and accessible to all” (page 6). Jamie Oliver, in a podcast with the BBC’s Kirsty Young, revealed that if he had his time again, he would eschew the trappings of being a celebrity chef in favour of a “nice life” running a pub with “60 covers, good beers, great wines [and] amazing service”. But, despite its enduring appeal, the number of licensed premises in Britain has dropped below 100,000 for the first time in 20 years. Add to this figures from the Brit- ish Beer & Pub Association, which estimate some 750 pubs are set to close in the first half of 2024 and the picture is far from rosy. Speech this week (see
thecaterer.com for analysis) and the Autumn Statement in two weeks’ time, industry bodies are crying out for support, through measures such as an extension of business rate relief and a duty freeze. Hopefully politicians will take a moment to sit in their local and realise the value of pubs in creat- ing that warm, welcom- ing environments that brings people from all walks of life together.
