mer yacht cruise agree to escort a young American hitchhiker (Tisa Farrow) to a Greek island. After a spell of sexual tension brought on by this seventh wheel, they arrive to find the island seemingly evacuated, its telegraph connec­ tions to the mainland severed. As a pregnant member of the crew relaxes onboard, the others ex­ plore the island village and dis­ cover a blind girl who can smell the approach of an evil presence. In time, the visitors are abducted or attacked by a deformed throw­ back (“George Eastman” aka Luigi Montefiori), once the son of the isle’s wealthiest family, who reverted to cannibalism af­ ter being shipwrecked with his family and making a meal of his wife and son. The grisly excesses of this Joe
D’Amato film—previously re­ leased on video as THE GRIM REAPER (Monterey) and THE MONSTER HCINTER (Wizard), and known in the ÜK as AB­ SURD—have attained notoriety after years of incredulous mention in print, although the footage in
question has actually been seen by very few people. This Midnight Video “Special Edition”—which reportedly took three years to cobble together—is the first com­ plete version ever made available in English. It contains the can­ nibal’s notorious legendary kill­ ing of the pregnant woman and the eating of her fetus (previously unavailable on OS video),and the closing shot of Eastman feasting on his own disemboweled intes­ tines (previously found only on the poor quality Venezuelan video ANTHROPOFAGO/THE SAVAGE ISLAND; VW 4:23-24). The image quality is very good, taken primarily from a Japanese source (the dialogue is subtitled in Japanese); unfortunately, the
