network components. In offi ce networks, the concept of “zero trust” is gaining in importance, where all participants, users and devices must fi rst prove their identity and integrity before any communication can take place. macmon secure has already extended its network protection, proven since 2003, to all corporate resources in the cloud in 2021 with its zero trust network access strategy. Communication within classic manufacturing and IT networks used to take place in closed systems, in the OT network with manufacturer specifi c protocols. These are now mostly connected to a TCP/ IP network. In addition, many sensors communicate wireless. Typical wireless technologies include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or RFID for close range, or mobile radio technologies and special low-power WAN radio technologies for long distances. Linking OT and IT accelerates and automates processes. It increases process reliability, minimizes machine downtime, and makes the supply chain more transparent. Employees can locate spare parts, goods, or transport vehicles in real time at the click of a mouse via mobile devices.

Network security solutions play a key role in digitization projects In Industry 4.0, OT and IT security is transforming into a key technology for accelerating the creation of value. With decades of experience, Belden recommends itself as a partner for security, such as through fi rewalls and Wi-Fi competence at Hirschmann, and the security competence of macmon secure. The fi rst joint projects, following the acquisition of macmon by the American company in spring 2022, stem from the cooperation with the subsidiary Hirschmann, the market leader for industrial networks. Hirschmann products off er a high level of transmission speed and reliability - even under the toughest conditions. This

knowledge of OT networks will be combined with macmon’s IT security expertise. The two are working together intensively to enable customers to securely access OT systems and applications in the network from their workstations in the offi ce or on the move. This enables users, for example, to diagnose faults in the event of a production malfunction via remote maintenance and to initiate maintenance actions.

By combining IT network access control with

existing OT security mechanisms, such as Hirschmann fi rewalls, a granular access concept can be implemented. This meets production requirements for availability and real-time capability.

macmon already protects OT networks by: ● Integrating all production technologies without endangering the network or the production itself

● Ensuring access to production systems for technicians by defi ning targeted communication channels and securing these channels accordingly

● Individual defi nition of policies at user and device level

● Support of ISO 27001 certifi cation ● Monitoring and control of all devices on the network (live inventory management)

● Documentation of all accesses to the network and comprehensive overview of individual resources

● Defi nition of targeted data routes and transfer interfaces for more targeted security solutions for technology know-how or production data ● Precise network segmentation
