producers, being a part of European industry cannot aff ord to sit back complacently but need to become more active in the dialogue that is taking place nowadays on the role of plastics in the Circular Economy and the future of plastics industry.

industry concerns The European Commission in the Strategy on Plastics has recognised the role of plastics in the modern world but at the same time highlighted major concerns linked with the ubiquitous

use

of plastics, such as: low rate of reuse and recycling of plastics, high dependence of fossil fuels and signifi cant leakage of plastics into the environment. The plastics industry has actively addressed those three issues, committing to contribute to each of them with a number of actions and measures that need to be undertaken by the industry in a wide partnership with value chain and with legislators. In this context the industry points out for example the necessity to install eff ective waste management systems including separate collection of packaging waste and to promote wise consumer behavior, but also the need to intensify innovations and innovative investment in order to increase reuse and recycling and to increase the use of alternative feedstock (renewables, waste, CO2

, etc.).

industry undertakings Declaration of European plastics industry to actively participate in the Strategy is summarized in Voluntary Commitments (VC) – a full

list of concrete and specifi c actions and undertakings to be tackled by plastics industry alone or together with other stakeholders in order to make a better use of plastics as a valuable

a few of them to show the variety and extent of the VC: ● In the area of preventing plastics leakage to the environment, plastics producing companies and members of PlasticsEurope association, declare that an exceptional eff ort will be done to involve 100% of association members in the Operation Clean Sweep program to prevent leakage of plastic granules and to support educational programs. ● In the area of increasing reuse and recycling of plastics packaging various programs will be launched aimed at creating guidelines for eco-design of packaging, at improving separate collection systems and sorting technologies and fi nally at increasing effi ciency of mechanical and chemical recycling. The ultimate goal should be to reach 60% of plastics packaging by 2030 and 100% of recovery of all plastic packaging by the year 2040. ● In the area of accelerating resource effi ciency several programs and activities will be launched on improving knowledge on waste data in EU countries, on improving and structuring standardization related to secondary raw materials and on facilitating and speeding up the use of alternative feedstocks. All these important statements from European plastics industry are also

fully valid for Polish plastics producers, plastics converters and recyclers. It is therefore obvious that the Polish plastics industry has to further develop and conduct more research and make investments in new technologies in order to be keep a competitive advantage. But the industry needs also to support all eff orts to increase products recyclability (ecodesign), environmental awareness as well as cooperate with all stakeholders, including local authorities towards a better use of this valuable resource. At stake here is preservation of competitiveness of plastics as a material against other materials and ensuring non-discrimination of plastics.

Kazimierz Borkowski, Managing Director, Fundacja PlasticsEurope Polska

PlasticsEurope is one of the leading European industry associations, with centres are located in Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Milan and Paris. Member companies have a combined share in the production of all polymers produced in European Union countries (EU28), as well as in Norway, Switzerland and Turkey, over 90% and generate a turnover of almost EUR 240 billion per year. PlasticsEurope also

cooperates resource.

Each of the commitments has a publicly declared deadline and progress of their implementation will be verifi ed by an independent committee. Among the numerous commitments let me mention only

at

the global level through the World Plastics Council (WPC) and through the Global Plastics Alliance (GPC).

The main goal is to solve the problem of littering the marine environment (Marine Litter). PlasticsEurope also maintains close cooperation with national associations related to the plastics industry. The Polish offi ce – PlasticsEurope Polska Foundation – is located in Warsaw | plasticseurope.org
