P
oland’s plastics industry has been growing steadily for the last several years in all aspects: sales, number of employees, production volumes and in number of investments. The plastics industry in Poland is an important industry sector: with the 2016 turnover at the level exceeding PLN 80 billion it signifi cantly contributes
to the Polish GDP. The plastics industry in Poland is represented by approximately 8,000 enterprises that employ nearly 160,000 employees. The largest and most dynamic part of this industry is plastics processing companies that are responsible for 84% of turnover and 95% of the industry employment. The plastics processing companies in Poland are mainly small and very small enterprises that employ 19 employees on average. Among the processing companies, the largest group is represented by manufacturers of packaging (containers, bottles, boxes, plastic foil), followed by manufacturers of pipes and profi les (for application in the construction industry), and manufacturers of cables. The plastics converting industry has taken advantage of a tendency of
many OEMs from “plastics customers industries” – major industries that consume plastics – who decided several years ago to move their plants (machine parts, assembly lines) from Western Europe to Poland in a search of cost reduction. Poland has become one of the biggest producers of home appliances from cooking, cleaning and food preservation equipment to consumer electronics (TV sets) and an important player in automotive parts and cars. In addition, with a large internal market of 38 million consumers and a good level of educated workforce, it is no surprise
that the performance of the plastics products manufacturing industry signifi cantly exceeded indices of Polish GDP in the last 10 years. We believe that the industry has a potential to record accelerated growth for another several years, but we need to take into considerations big changes on the horizon due to challenges imposed by the Circular Economy and the Plastics Strategy legislative initiatives.
