In recent months, media reports from all around the world have spoken of ‘tourism-phobia’, with pictures appearing of citizens protesting against the ‘invasion of tourists’ and the expulsion of locals by tourism businesses.. Travel and tourism has become a sector central to our societies. Recognising how tourism can help address many of our common challenges, the United Nations declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

development. Successful destination development can bring tremendous economic gains, bringing in currency from travellers, employment opportunities and investment in real estate and infrastructure. How can governments create the right environment to bring on board the right stakeholders when developing a destination, and attract investors, businesses and travellers?
