CHAPTER 5 PRESSURE AND FLOTATION CHAPTER 5 EXERCISE 5B CONTINUED
5. The value of the product of pressure and volume (PV) of a fi xed mass of gas is 15 Pa m3. Assuming temperature remains constant, calculate the new product of pressure and volume (PV ) when volume is quartered.

6. A wooden rectangular block of sides 0.4 m × 0.3 m × 0.6 m is submerged in a tank of water, so that its lower surface is at a depth of 1 m. If the block is orientated so that the greatest surface areas are at the top and bottom of the block, calculate:
(i) the pressure exerted by the water on the lower surface of the block
(ii) the pressure exerted by the water on the upper surface of the block
(iii) the force exerted by the water on the lower surface of the block
(iv) the force exerted by the water on the upper surface of the block.

If the weight of the block is 525 N, will the block fl oat or sink?
