I’ll devise a mean to draw the Moor Out of the way
(Iago to Cassio) l.39
I never knew A Florentine more kind and honest
(Cassio) l.43–4
Iago pretends to do everything in his power to help the former lieutenant regain his position. Yet the audience knows that he is secretly accelerating his plan to damn the gullible Cassio and the innocent Desdemona in Othello’s eyes. Ironically, nobody suspects Iago.
This statement shows Cassio’s lack of judgement. Only the audience is aware of Iago’s true character. The manipulative puppet master’s limitless capacity for deception is slowly entrapping everyone around him. We watch in disbelief as events continue to work in Iago’s favour.
I will bestow you where you shall have time To speak your bosom freely
(Emilia to Cassio) l.60–1
Emilia is used by Iago to trap Cassio and Desdemona. She is unaware of her husband’s devious plans. Her well- intentioned interference will prove tragically disastrous. Through her action, Iago will be able to present their innocent meeting to Othello in the worst possible light, damaging not only Cassio but also Desdemona’s reputation for ever.
