Act 1 Scene 1
The opening scene takes place on a street in Venice late at night. Iago talks to Roderigo about his hatred for Cassio and Othello. He informs Brabantio that his daughter Desdemona has secretly married the Moor Othello, a general in the Venetian army.
Act 1 Scene 3
The Duke of Venice and his senators prepare for war against the Turks. Othello answers Brabantio’s accusations of bewitching his daughter and is sent to Cyprus on military duty. Iago initiates his scheme of revenge against the Moor.
Act 2 Scene 1
Othello, Desdemona and Iago arrive in Cyprus. A storm at sea has destroyed the Turkish fleet. Iago involves Roderigo in his plan to discredit Cassio and replace him as Othello’s lieutenant. He also swears to ruin the happiness of the newlyweds.
