O10 Collaborate with others to explore understandings of spoken texts
Place the following characters in a space in the classroom, either in a line or a circle surrounding Friar Laurence: à Friar Laurence
à Romeo à Juliet à Tybalt à Friar John à The Nurse à Capulet à The Prince à Paris
Friar Laurence will then read out his story. Whenever he mentions a character, the class should point to the relevant actor, and the actor should raise their right hand. This is a fast-paced exercise, so everyone will need to listen carefully.
This technique is used by acting companies when they rehearse Romeo and Juliet. It gives everyone an understanding of each character’s role in the story.
