HUMAN GEOGRAPHY Some positive factors that
attract human settlement Favourable climate with no extremes of temperature or precipitation levels.
Flat or gently sloping land that is fertile and easy to build on.
Enough wealth and levels of development to stimulate industry and jobs.
Accessibility to coasts and to other highly populated areas.
Good transport and other infrastructure.
Northern Canada – very sparsely populated Long, dark and bitterly cold winters discourage human settlement and agriculture.
Remoteness and few roads make the region inaccessible.
Human communities are small and scattered. Population growth is low.
Negative factors that discourage human
settlement Climatic extremes (too hot, too cold, too dry or too wet).
Steep and infertile land that is difficult to farm or build on. Very high mountains where oxygen levels and low atmospheric pressure make human survival difficult.
Insufficient wealth or development to stimulate industry or jobs.
Inaccessibility. Poor transport and other infrastructure.
