POPULATION DISTRIBUTION AND DENSITY


 Population distribution refers to the spread of people throughout an area.  People are unevenly distributed throughout the world.  Regions such as East Asia possess positive factors that encourage dense population.  Regions such as the Sahara Desert endure negative factors that result in very sparse populations.


 Population density is the average number of people per square kilometre.  The population of Italy’s Mezzogiorno is unevenly distributed. Richer coastal areas are more densely populated than poorer interior areas.


County


1. The table in Figure 5 refers to the populations of the counties of Connacht in 2006. Using graph paper, draw a graph that shows the data in the table.

2. The information in Figure 6 relates to the size of counties in Connacht. Use Figure 5 and Figure 6 together to calculate the population densities of Counties Mayo and Sligo.


3. Examine the world map in Figure 7, which shows density of population by country. (a) Identify examples of each of the following:  Two areas of high population density.  Two areas of low population density.


(b) Account for the population densities of one densely populated area and of one sparsely populated area that you identified in question (a) above. (LC Higher Level sample paper – 30 marks)


4. Describe and explain, using examples that you have studied, the difference between the terms population density and population distribution.
