Unit 6 A STUDY SKILLS: SKIMMING A TEXT

When you skim a text, you read it quickly to find information you need. First, look at the title and headings. They give you clues about the subject of the text. Then look for the key words.

1

This is an extract from a university handbook. Skim-read it. Does it have the answers to the students’ questions?

Lebanese American University (LAU)

Student accommodation

2

LAU has student rooms on campus and not on campus. On campus, there are different residences for men and women. Each room has Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, heating, kitchen and laundry facilities. All student accommodation has 24-hour CCTV security. For help in finding the right room for you, contact our accommodation office.

Information for new students

Eating on campus

The main university cafeteria is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. It offers many different types of food. There is also a smaller internet café in the Health and Sciences Centre with snacks and sandwiches. In addition, there are some local restaurants that deliver food to the campus.

Students’ questions

a Where can I have dinner? b What are the library opening hours? c Where can I study? d Does the college have a residence for women?

B COMMUNICATION: CHECKING, CONFIRMING AND CORRECTING

When we give information on the phone, it’s easy to make mistakes. Try these skills to help you. 1 Match the skills (a–d) with the sentences on the right.

a Ask people to repeat. b Repeat the information to make sure you’re right. c Confirm information that’s correct. d Correct people when they make mistakes.

2 3

Who says each sentence in 1 – the person giving the information (GI) or the person receiving the information (RI)?

No, at 11.30, not 10.30. So at the Mercure Hotel? Exactly! Sorry, where? No, that’s not right. It’s on Tuesday. So the meeting starts at 10.30? That’s right. Can you say that again?

Write a conversation for a phone call about a meeting or conference. Use similar phrases to the ones in 1.

Studying in the library

There are three libraries at LAU. You use your student identity card to get into the library. It has study spaces for students to work alone or in groups. Students can scan or photocopy books and journals and borrow laptops from the library.
