About Dart Harbour T

he River Dart rises high on Dartmoor, running through the exposed moorland of

the last wilderness in southern England. At Totnes the fresh water meets the tidal salt water and becomes the Dart Estuary for the last 11 nautical miles to the sea. The river sits in a drowned valley, technically known as a ria, which winds its way lazily through the South Devon countryside, to the natural port of Dartmouth. These estuarine waters are the responsibility of Dart Harbour.

We are a trust port – an independent, not-

for-profit statutory body created by an Act of Parliament. Dart Harbour is managed, maintained and improved by an independent volunteer board and an executive team for the benefit of its stakeholders, and ultimately for future generations. We charge harbour dues and mooring fees, using all income generated to run the harbour, with surpluses invested in improvements for the future.

Our role as a Statutory Harbour Authority

means that we have ultimate responsibility for safety and navigation in the harbour. Other duties involve taking care of the environment, such as a need to respond to any oil spills or other pollution, and to provide waste reception facilities.

We are also a competent harbour authority,

meaning we have the responsibility to maintain a pilotage service to ensure that large ships can navigate safely in our waters. Under Trinity House we are also the local lighthouse authority, meaning that we look aſter all of the aids to navigation on the river, from the iconic daymark high above Kingswear, to the navigation marks all the way up river.

Much of our work is involved in the provision and licensing of moorings, with around 1,600 of our own moorings on the river and other marinas and independent moorings licensed by ourselves.
