DRYING GRIDS
Dart Harbour manages two scrubbing grids, located in Dartmouth and near the Hoodown workshop in Kingswear.
Usage requires a booking and completion of a mandatory safety briefing. Drying out in these areas without permission violates byelaws, risks being moved off the wall, and may invalidate insurance. The grid or beach areas north of the grid are strictly monitored, and adherence to procedures is essential. Contact the Harbour Office for guidance if uncertain.
Grid usage should be planned during Dart Harbour working hours to avoid additional charges. Booking and safety briefing documents are available on the Dart Harbour website. These rules apply to all vessels drying on the embankment. Users must have a solid understanding of their vessel’s keel design to position it correctly on the grid's horizontal splines. The Dartmouth grid, rebuilt in 2023, now features a concrete pad accommodating all keel types.
The grids must not be used for cleaning heavy fouling, as this risks polluting the environment with harmful chemicals.
Safety is paramount during the drying-out process. Even experienced owners may face challenges, but Dart Harbour provides assistance to prevent injury or damage. Controlling the vessel’s angle (list and pitch) is critical in case of unexpected issues, and Harbour Staff are available to help when needed.
Dart Harbour's procedures ensure safety and effective use of the grids, maintaining both the well-being of users and environmental protection.
Dartmouth Grid dries at 2.2m Height of Tide (for example a 1.0m draſt vessels can use the grid at above 3.2m HOT).
Hoodown Grid dries at 2.95m HOT (for example a 1.0m draſt vessels can use the grid at above 4.0
Dartmouth Grid is suitable for vessels up to 12.5 metres (2.5m draſt) and the Kingswear grid for vessels up to 10m max (up to 1.6m draſt).
DO NOT ATTEMPT DRYING WITH ANY SIGNIFICANT SWELL.
