Dartmouth Regatta: 23rd
- 26th
Family Fun Weekend Saturday 19th Sunday 20th
August August
August &
Dartmouth’s Royal Regatta is the biggest of the town’s many events and has been running for nearly 180 years. Locals and visitors alike come to enjoy the rowing, sailing, music, fireworks, displays and parades in the river, crabbing and fancy dress competitions and the local rowing crews train hard for the all important championships on the River Dart. There’s a great buzz during the week with music every day in the Royal Avenue Gardens, the traditional Waiters and Waitresses races and so many other free family fun event with the Regatta Shopping Parade taking over much of the town’s embankment and showcasing so many local businesses.
The organisers are always so very proud that His Majesty’s Royal Marine Band perform at the official Opening Ceremony, which will take place on Wednesday 23rd
August and that they receive so
much support from organisations and volunteers from throughout the town and across the South Hams. The whole event is steeped in history since Queen Victoria bestowed the Royal title upon it after a visit to Dartmouth in 1856 and in this special Coronation year the celebrations will be even more memorable. Once more we see the return of the River Parade to the Regatta, the Coronation River Parade invites participants to commemorate and celebrate with another fantastic gathering on the River Dart.
There’s something for the whole family with many activities and competitions to get involved in including the legendary Kontiki Raft Race and the unique and beloved Spot the Oddity competition. You will see lots of children spending hours looking in shop windows to ‘spot the oddity’. Whether it’s finding a tin of baked beans in an art gallery or spotting a carefully hidden wooden spoon on display in a clothes shop - this game
is somehow deeply satisfying whatever your age! The extremely successful Family Fun weekend on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th August continues to focus on the great family activities that have proved so popular in past years. We also see the return of the Dartmouth Regatta FIRE WALK, following its hugely successful launch last year.
The week wraps up after the sunset awards and Grand Draw on Saturday 26th August, the final Saturday night, when everything culminates in a dramatic fireworks display, closing ceremony and music into the night.
In the Coronation year, 178th Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta 2023 will be yet another Regatta year not to be missed! For more information, visit www.dartmouthregatta.
