56 Dartmouth Castle & Gallants Bower


A stroll along the River Dart to Dartmouth Castle. There are breathtaking views over the River Dart as you climb to Gallants Bower. This is a brilliant walk in spring, when, around the castle, the woods are carpeted with wild- flowers and ring with birdsong.


A CIRCULAR WALK


START: Coronation Park, Dartmouth - TQ6 9PQ


DISTANCE: 3.3 miles (5.3 km) TERRAIN: Moderate. Streets, tarmac paths and woodland footpaths, with some stretches of ascent and descent including steps.


Route Description 1. From Coronation Park, near the Higher Ferry on the North Embankment, turn right to head downstream.


2. Reaching the end of Coro- nation Park, carry on along the North Embankment, past the Boat Float.


3. Continue ahead along the South Embankment, and at the end turn right through Cole’s Court.


A CIRCULAR WALK


START: The National Trust Car Park, Redlap, Little Dartmouth - TQ6 0JP


DISTANCE: 4.2 miles (6.7 km) Moderate.


TERRAIN: Coastal path and field footpaths, uneven in places and sometimes muddy, surfaced road and bridleway. Some uphill and downhill.


4. Turn left down Lower Street to carry on alongside the river to Bayards Cove Fort.


5. Taking the steps up from the old castle, turn left onto South- town and follow the South West Coast Path to Gallants Bower at Warfleet Road.


6. Follow the footpath through the woods from Gallants Bower until you reach Castle Road. Turn left here to follow the road to Dartmouth Castle.


7. Leaving the castle, carry on along the river past One Gun Point to Warfleet Cove.


8. At Warfleet Cove you are returned to the road. From here retrace your steps to Coronation Park.


Little Dartmouth & St Petrox


A high-level walk around the cliffs above the mouth of the River Dart. Allow time for exploring the remains of many centuries of history around Dartmouth Castle, Warfleet Cove and Gallants Bower. Gallants Bower is the perfect place in Spring when the bluebells are resplendent. The cliffs and coastal grasslands provide valuable habitat for many birds, plants and fauna.
