Academy Esslingen, Mr. Seizer, Chairman of the board of Technical Academy Esslingen presented Prof. Bartz with the Golden Badge of Technical Academy Esslingen.

Mr Mesenholl went on to tell us that Prof. Bartz studied Automotive Engineering at Hannover University, and that as a young engineer he dealt with application consulting of lubricants at the precursor of Fuchs Petrolub.

At the Institute of Petroleum Research in Hannover, he wrote his dissertation in ‘rheological behaviour of lubricants in bearings’ and for fifteen years he was team leader in the department of tribology and lubrication at the same institute.

After his work in Hannover he became the director and scientific head of Technische Akademie Esslingen (1976 – 2001). In those 25 years he led the institute to a Germany-wide known institute of continuing education.

Consulting and continuing education is still today the life’s work of Prof. Bartz. In the department of tribology and lubrication he is well-known throughout the world.

The Esslingen Tribology Conference was founded by Prof. Bartz 40 years ago and is, up to this day, one of the largest conferences in tribology worldwide.

During his professional life, Prof. Bartz was professor and lecturer at the universities of Hannover, Stuttgart, Wien and Esslingen. He received an honorary doctor of science in 2001.

Finally, Mr Mesenholl thanked Prof. Bartz and with the words “Many thanks for your work and your personal commitment during 40 years. As the honorary chairman of this conference, you are heartily welcome to this conference in future too. We wish Prof. Bartz furthermore good luck and health for his life’s work. Thank you very much.”

The entire congregation acknowledged the acclaim which had been bestowed upon him, with a standing ovation.

The TAE International Colloquium provides a comprehensive and cost effective overview, covering the theory of friction, wear and lubrication in an industrial context. The combination of lectures and networking gives valuable insight and access to the industry. The variation in subject matter kept interest throughout the three days.
