cleanliness measurements of a Sequence IIIG engine test. As shown in Figure 5, the reference engine (top) was run using a standard quality GF oil while the test engine (bottom) was run using an estolide formulation. The reference engine showed levels of varnish consistent with what is expected from a standard motor oil formulation, however, the test engine with the estolide formulation, showed outstanding overall cleanliness and minimal varnish clearly revealing the natural detergency of estolides. Employing the use of estolides in metalworking fluid formulations has demonstrated very positive results in micro tap testing of aluminium (Figure 6).

The three estolide based formulations revealed a significant improvement in reducing torque and improving efficiency during the micro tap testing of aluminium comparted to the reference formulation (Figure 6 in the far left hand column – Heavy Duty Semi with Phos additive). Note that the estolide formulations did not require any phosphorous- based additive indicating that the estolides are polar additives that have inherent affinity to metal surfaces and help protect metal surfaces.

Historically, the category of bio-lubricants was mainly government or regulatory driven. Now, the market demand is beginning to drive the market. In a world

where sustainability is on the forefront of major purchasing decisions, the need for biodegradable, sustainable, and high-performance lubricants demand an offering that fits the bill, in a cost-effective manner.

Biosynthetic® Technologies estolides are a

revolutionary new class of biobased synthetic compounds. These highly functional biosynthetic oils have numerous uses as a lubricant in marine, industrial, grease, and PCMO as well as in metal working fluids, personal care, food, and other applications. They can be used as the primary base oil of a lubricant formulation, a component of a base oil co-blend, or as an additive.

In addition to their high-performance properties, these oils are biodegradable, sustainable, responsible, renewable, non-bioaccumulative, and non-toxic. Since Biosynthetic base oils are compatible with common lubricant base oils and additives, they serve as an easy drop-in replacement for most existing formulations available in the market.
