Sustainability was key topic at the 22nd International Colloquium Tribology

Werner Schollenberger, CEO of Technische Akademie Esslingen (TAE), welcomed 540 participants from 30 different countries to the leading tribology convention in Europe, which was originally started by Prof. Wilfried Bartz in 1976. He was followed by Christoph Wincierz, chairman of GfT, giving a remembrance speech in honor of the late Duncan Dowson, last member of the Jost Committee and father of ‘Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication Theory’ (EHL) lubrication theory.

Sustainability was the key theme with particular interest by the younger generation with a special session on sustainable lubricants. Already in the opening plenary session that theme was endorsed by presentations on the economic impact, STLE’s Emerging Trends analysis, opportunities for lubricants in electromobility, impact of electromobility on tribology and a general sustainability analysis.

Nine parallel running sessions covered classical topics such as base oils, testing, additives, greases, seals, sliding bearings, rolling element bearings, oil analysis,

friction, wear, coatings, automotive lubricants and metalworking fluids. New session topics besides the sustainability were electromobility, simulation and i-Tribomat. Lubricant performance for electromobility need to improve in boundary friction while having different thermal and electrical conductivity. Simulation of molecular changes in the lubricating contact zone made significant improvements with increasing computing power. The i-Tribomat project collects, exchanges and analyses tribological data to increase the speed of testing new tribological materials, thus leading to faster adaptation to industrial applications.

Not only were there more younger colleagues attending in general, but they clearly voiced their opinions represented by Young Tribologist groups from GfT and JAST. Their view of the future is that Tribology will play an important role to combine society, environment and economics to save our planet.

Save the date for the 23rd International Colloquium Tribology, which will take place from 25–27 January 2022!
