Poland is the second-fastest growing economy in the European Union. The robust, nearly 8% growth of the MWFs market is largely attributed to an increase in demand for forming fluids, which is driven by growing demand for communication equipment and vehicles. The country is expected to witness the highest Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) through the forecast period.


In Germany, metalworking fluids demand dropped in 2019 compared to 2018 due to a decrease in demand for German goods in emerging markets.


Another development affecting the manufacturing process and gaining popularity is near-net shape (NNS) finished products. NNS is widely used in the automotive industry, contributing to the decrease of removal fluids but the increased use of forming fluids.


From a product standpoint, several trends will affect the formulation, and in some cases, the future demand for metalworking fluids and their additives.

These include fluid performance, health, safety, and environment-related issues such as reduced exposure limits for lubricant misting, a further reduction in the use of chlorine-containing additives, and the phaseout of diethanolamine.


There is also increased research and development on biostable fluids as well as biodegradable fluids, as their environmentally positive characteristics are having marketers increasingly move towards these alternatives.

Trends Impacting the MWFs Market Among the top trends that could dramatically impact the market is the movement toward microlubrication, also called minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), which requires the use of the minimum amount of fluid to a workpiece.


The fluid is totally consumed during the machining operation (also called a “total-loss” operation).


Increasing awareness about the environmental impact of fluids and lubricants is driving the MQL trend as well as the move toward dry machining, as these combine ecological, qualitative, and economic advantages.


Therefore, it is not surprising that considerable research is underway to advance these technologies.


Dry machining is widely used in open-face operations such as turning and milling. In milling operations, air, rather than oil, does the cooling, hence fluid is not required. However, dry machining is currently limited to specific materials and niche applications due to the requirement of high-heat-resistant cutting tools.

A fairly new trend in the market for anticorrosion products is the introduction of vapor-phase corrosion- inhibiting products, also known as volatile corrosion inhibitors (VCI).


Outlook Trends such as better housekeeping, recycling, use of longer-life metalworking fluids, and other technological changes are among factors slowing down the growth of the market.


All the product categories are reported to witness slow growth, with treating fluid expected to see the lowest CAGR.


The metalworking industry is witnessing a quality shift toward semi-synthetic and synthetic fluids, and companies that develop superior synthetic and semi-synthetic formulations will be well-positioned to gain market share.


North and South America are estimated to see stable growth. However, in terms of absolute volume, the United States’ metalworking fluid consumption will grow the most in this region.
