BLF INDUSTRY SURVEY 1995

BENCHMARKING Benchmarking is a structured method of comparing the activities of one company with those of another. It is used to identify weaknesses, determine targets, motivate staff and identify new ways of doing things. Less than 50% of BLF members have used it, but those who have believe that they have gained considerable benefit from it. Members support the establishment of 'Benchmarking Clubs' to develop benchmarking of specific activities for specific groups of members. Results would only be available to the members of the specific 'clubs' .

SECTORAL MARKET REVIEWS

Members identified the need for the publication of regular reviews of the major trends in all of the key sectors of the UK Lubricants industry. These reviews would be sold at commercial prices and would focus on sectors such as Passenger Car, Commercial Transport and specific parts of the industrial market. The reviews would analyse: demand; customer behaviour; channels; and competition. Such reviews are already widely available for other industries.

4. NEXT STEPS

The findings of this survey have been supported by the BLF Council. Together with LCC, they have drawn up an action plan to implement the new commercial services. This was presented to members at the recent seminar in Cheltenham. The plan will be implemented in two phases. The aim of the first phase (1996) will be to build confidence amongst members of the quality and relevance of the services, and of the BLF as a credible supplier. To achieve this the BLF will deliver a small number of high quality services quickly, involve members in setting priorities, and develop detailed plans for future years. Amongst the new services for 1996 are: new conferences (dealing with management themes such as benchmarking and business performance); benchmarking 'clubs'; and syndicated market research groups. Delivering high quality commercial services to members is a key goal of the BLF. However, success will depend upon the active participation of members. Support is needed for the launch of these initiatives, and both the BLF and LCC are looking for members who are willing to play an active role. In the coming months LCC and the BLF will be contacting members for their views and support.

This survey was carried out independently by The Lubricants Consulting Company Ltd. (LCC). LCC are a specialist consulting firm focused on the Lubricants industry. The findings are a compendium of the views of individual members of the BLF and do not necessarily represent the views of the British Lubricants Federation Ltd. Further information about this survey and about future services can be obtained from Richard Meads, Director, LCC on: 01892 542240. Copies of the full report (priced £25) are available from Rod Parker, Executive Director, BLF on: 01442 230589.
