MEMBERS NEWS OBITUARIES Ron Battye

My recollections of visits to Batoyle over 30 years ago to the old works site was that it was a typicaL well run Yorkshire family business.

The family partners were content and with business thriving in the 60's and 70's they seemed to be resigned to the fact that the good times would continue.Ron did not share the views of his elders and saw the need for bringing the company up to date and the new site in the Vale was to fulfill his dream.

An astute and hard working character. he started to change the image of Batoyle in the automotive, industrial and textile divisions he had created within the company.

Despite this burden he undertook extra activities and was a very active member of the Yorkshire Branch of the Oil and Grease Federation and the British Lubricants Federation of which he served a period as Chairman of the Yorkshire and North Eastern Branch.

He became a council member of the British Lubricant Federation and I recall his important input into the initial council meetings where the Articles of Association and Memorandum had to be re-written.

He also found time to act as travel agent for a number of the Federation's overseas visits.

He showed a great interest in both European and American business activities and was one of the first to recognise the advantages of becoming a member of the European Union of Independent Lubricant Manufacturers. In pursuit of his business ideals he also had many contacts with members of Independent Lubricant Manufacturers of America.

My regret is that because of the reorganisation of his company he did not think he could devote sufficient time and energy to accept an invitation to become my Vice-President which would have allowed him to become a respected President of the Fedaration.

A man of many parts he completed his job at Batoyle and then retired to an active life of his favourite pastime - walking - and some Federation members have found his enthusiasm for such activities far beyond them but marvelling in his total dedication to it.

Ron will be greatly missed by his colleagues and friends and our sympathy goes out to those dear to him.

Peter Moore, Past President, British Lubricants Federation.

Peter Saunders

It is with deep regret that I have to report the death of Peter Saunders on Sunday, 14th February 1993.

Peter joined CC Wakefield in 1955 as a Laboratory Assistant and progressed his career through a number of technical roles. In 1972 he joined the Edwin Cooper Group remaining with them after their split from the Burmah Castrol Group. Peter returned to Castrol in 1980 as International Operations Co-Ordinator. He was subsequently appointed Purchasing Manager in 1982 and left the company in November 1991.

Peter will be remembered throughout the company by his many friends and colleagues and our deepest sympathy goes to his wife Alison.

I Editor's Notes~]

As indicated in the last edition, we have reverted back to a 12-page version for this issue (or 14 including the insert!) since the volume of information has reverted back to a more leisurely input.

For those asking for more pictures and less text, the Federation has responded by purchasing its own camera, thus giving the Editor an opportunity to demonstrate a notable lack of expertise, saved only by advanced technology.

Hopefully, by the time that you receive this copy of "Lube", the 1993 up-date of the Members Handbook will already have been circulated. Compilation of the new version has not been an easy task; approximately 50% of the entries have been modified to reflect various organisational changes. The perpetual moving target means that the new version is already out-of-date; however, it is certainly more accurate than previously.

The presentations scheduled for our Spring Seminar are in direct response to the requests that we received via our questionnaire on the previous occasion. From comments received, we understand that more of our members are relying on these Trade Awareness Seminars to keep them up-dated on all topical issues relevant to the industry.

Hope to meet you there if not before! David Margaroni
