NEWS FROM THE BRITISH LUBRICANTS FEDERATION ISSUE No. 14 SPRING 1993

API SH

ILSAC Certification Mark API Service Symbol IMPLICATIONS FOR BLENDERS

The introduction of the new API Service Oil category "SH" has major implications for crankcase oil formulators and blenders. In order to highlight the particular requirements of this new category, David Margaroni, "Lube" Editor, questioned Rod Pesch, Crankcase Technical Service Manager with Ethyl Petroleum Additives, about the new performance level.

DM: With the introduction of APISH, I understand that the engine tests are still the same. Why then are we hearing that this new requirement is such a signifcant increase in severity?

RP: What you say is essentially true, tied also with the fact that one test, the Caterpillar lH2, has actually been dropped, compared to API SG. (Replaced by CAT lG2 if SH/CD is to be claimed). However, there are some very good reasons why passing a test programme for API SH will prove to be more demanding.

All testing tnust now be run under the CMA code of practice which stipulates three significant changes to past accepted practice.

i) All sponsors must now register their tests with the RSI (Registration Systems Inc). At the same time the sponsor may identify the test laboratory they intend to use. The laboratory must be one which is approved by the CMA (Chemical Manufacturers Association). The RSI will then select the test stand to be used. This is carried out by a random selection procedure. So eliminating the use of "soft" stands.

ii) Oil Blend Modification Rules will apply throughout a programme, tightly controlling base oil changes, component changes or treat rates. If necessary, tests will need to be re-run when changes exceed specified limits.

iii) The Multiple Test Acceptance Criteria (MTAC) strictly controls the number of tests which can be run to get a pass. All results will be subjected to averaging. Where three tests have been run a single outlier may be excluded.

Quite clearly this is a more complex and demanding regime and replaces the old system where any number of tests could be run to give one passing result which could then be taken in isolation.
