The Firsty Group was established in 2010, but it began life back in 2003 as a dedicated web development agency. In 2010 it chose to focus almost exclusively on delivering digital services to publishers and so Firsty was born.

fter seven years on this shortlist, and a couple of Children’s Publisher Nibbies during that time, Nosy Crow finally scoops the Independent

Publisher of the Year Award. It carried its relentless growth into its ninth

year to become the TCM’s 12th-biggest children’s publisher in 2019, and break into the top 30 overall. Its biggest seller was Ingela P Arrhenius’ Where’s Mr Duck?, but Nosy Crow has always thrived on strength in depth in picture books and fiction rather than big brands, celebrities or one- off hits. Its partner publishing with the National Trust, John Lewis and the British Museum has flourished too. But if its UK story is impressive, its international one is extraordinary. Two-thirds of its sales come from overseas, and it has huge reach for an indie, selling rights and coeditions into nearly 50 territories last year. Nosy Crow’s energy and dedication is admired by authors,

illustrators, agents, bookshops and publishing partners alike. “There’s no greater delight for a bookseller than the Nosy Crow list,” said one retailer. “Nothing short of exceptional—a joy to work with,” added an agent. The judges also applauded Nosy Crow’s

imaginative marketing, which includes some of the best branding in publishing, and its efforts to promote literacy and diversity. “Everything Nosy Crow does is really well thought through and brilliantly executed,” they said.

HIGHLY COMMENDED in this category is Atlantic Books. Under m.d. Will Atkinson, it has gone from the brink of bankruptcy to profitability, critical acclaim and 14% TCM growth in 2019. Hits included Oyinkan Braithwaite’s My Sister, the Serial Killer, and judges admired its strong marketing and publicity: “This is a big turnaround story... Atlantic is publishing very thoughtfully.”
