My job in five
Emma Wray is Octopus Books’ North American sales assistant
Describe your role. My job involves working closely with our colleagues in New York on our trade list. I then liaise with other North American publishers to fulfil co-edition deals. I’m part of a small team within Octopus and my job is to manage all aspects of the sales process, which involves regular contact with colleagues in North America and building client relationships. Frankfurt will be my first overseas book fair, and I’m really looking forward to experiencing the buzz of the event.
What do you like best about your role? I like working with colleagues and clients from different backgrounds, sharing experiences and getting to know the ins and outs of doing business within different territories. I also really enjoy being able to work with a variety of departments, and the fast- paced working environment. I’m fortunate to be part of a great team who are really enthusiastic about our books.
Which skills do you need for your role? For the fulfilment side of my job especially, you need to be well organised to keep track of ongoing client orders, and to help plan for future reprints and deals. I think that the role requires a clear, business- minded approach, and good negotiation and interpersonal skills. It also really helps if you are able to keep a calm head in the post-book fair rush.

Which new projects or titles are you working on at the moment? I’ve got a specific responsibility for developing our
Amazon.com presence, and this is giving me a great opportunity to expand my understanding of online selling platforms, and how they can benefit Octopus. I’m also preparing for the Frankfurt follow-up.
What advice would you give to those looking to work in the industry? Understand that this is a competitive industry, but be determined—and don’t give up. This is an industry that offers so many different roles, so the more experience you can gain, the better. Do your research... there are now paid internships and schemes to help people get into the industry, and you’ll find lots of information on sites like
theSYP.co.uk, or on Twitter @ pubinterns. It’s a great business to work in, full of opportunities and challenges (you need to know that it’s not always easy going), and ultimately really rewarding once you see a book you have worked on in a bookshop or listed on Amazon!
