EBELLION PUBLISHING IS reimagining legend- ary British football comic Roy of the Rovers for modern audiences, with a series of hardback graphic novels and accompanying middle grade illus- trated fiction titles coming next year. Roy of the Rovers was first brought to life by Frank S

Pepper in the Tiger comic in September 1954 and was last seen in the monthly Match of the Day football maga- zine in May 2001. Rebellion decided to reboot the brand aſter acquiring it from Egmont UK in 2016. Rob Power, brand manager at Rebellion, explained: “Given the length of time Roy has been away from the limelight, we felt that the time was right to bring him back for a new generation.” Rebellion describes the original Roy of the Rovers as a “household name” whose influence “reached way beyond comics”. The series was known for its empha-

sis on teamwork and fair play, with Power calling the central character Roy Race “a positive role model for boys and a genuine, long-standing hero to generations of football fans”.

The new Roy of the Rovers will star a young Roy as he

starts his career at Melchester Rovers. Like the original, the reboot will showcase “a deep passion for football, and for fun, exciting adventures on and off the pitch”. However, there will be differences. Power said: “Foot- ball is a very different game now to what it was in the ’70s and ’80s, and our story will reflect that. Roy is going to have to deal with the realities of football in the lower leagues, the perils of fame and the atention of agents and clubs determined to exploit his talent and turn him into the next megastar.” The series will also explore issues that are relevant to today’s readers, such as dealing with social media.
