S GUEST OF Honour at this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair for the first time in 28 years, France has high hopes for increasing rights sales to Germany and promoting culture as a pillar of the European Union, according to French book professionals. Yet some in the industry have raised questions about whether the heſty price tag for the programme provides value for money. France has a dual responsibilit to the French language and to Europe, culture minister Françoise Nyssen said during a reception for the official publisher and author delegation on 20th September. She was accompanied by Turkish author Asli Erdogan, who was on her first trip abroad since her release from prison in Turkey last December.
French president Emmanuel Macron, accompanied by Nyssen, inaugurated the French Pavilion yesterday (10th October), and Nyssen will chair a meeting with her German (and other nations’) counterparts today to discuss European issues such as copyright and VAT on e-books, and to produce a joint declaration. FBF is important on both the commercial and politi- cal fronts, says Jean-Guy Boin, director-general of the Bureau International de l’Edition Française (BIEF), which promotes the French publishing industry abroad.
