Abbott goes hybrid for Headline K

WORDS Katherine Cowdrey

INDLE CHART-TOPPER RACHEL Abbot, one of the UK’s bestselling self-published authors, has signed a two-book deal with Headline

to become a “hybrid author”, published by Wild- fire and Kindle Direct Publishing in tandem. The deal followed a “closely-fought” five-way auction ahead of this year’s Frankfurt Book Fair. Senior commissioning editor Kate Stephen- son, who acquired UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) from Lizzy Kremer at David Higham, said: “[Abbot] has established one of the strongest brands in the psychological suspense market. It is our firm belief that she deserves to be as successful in print as she is in the digital world.” According to Headline, Abbot has sold 2.75 million copies in the past six years, and has been translated into 21 languages. Her move to traditional publishing will see her published by Wildfire while continuing to publish separately through Kindle Direct Publishing. The first book in the deal is And So It Begins, a psychological thriller that asks if there can ever be a proper defence for murder. It introduces a new character, Sergeant Stephanie King, and will be published as a lead hardback in spring 2019. Abbot said: “I love sharing my books via self- publishing and will continue to do so as a hybrid author, but I’m always searching for ways to

engage with readers. This is an incredibly exciting opportunit—one I couldn’t be happier about.” Internationally, Wiebke Rossa at Blanvalet snapped up German rights in a two-book deal, while Spanish rights were pre-empted by Penguin Random House. Danish rights were pre-empted by Gad, also in a two-book deal. Auctions are under way in Italy and the Czech Republic, French rights are under offer, and David Higham expects to close more translation deals during the fair.

Harper inks global deal for Winslow

HarperCollins has acquired world rights to two books from Don Winslow pictured in “a major global publishing agreement”. David Highfill, vice-president and executive editor for William Morrow in the US, brokered the deal with Shane Salerno at The Story Factory. The books, scheduled to be published in 2021 and 2022 respectively by William Morrow in the US and HarperFiction in the UK, will be published directly by HarperCollins across several territories. Julia Wisdom, crime and thriller publisher at HarperFiction, said: “Don Winslow is one of the pre-eminent contemporary American crime writers and a remarkable chronicler for our times. His work goes from strength to strength... [he is] one of the all-time greats. We cannot wait to bring his new books to readers across the globe.” Winslow has written 20 novels, with The Force, published in July, his fourth

consecutive New York Times bestseller. He has been nominated three times for the Ian Fleming Steel Dagger and once for the Gold Dagger for Best Novel.

The first, to be published as a lead title in autumn 2019, was described by Theroux as a “forensic and thoughtful appraisal of my life and career”—covering his 2001 BBC documentary “When Louis Met Jimmy”—in which he explores “the nature of evil”. Theroux added: “I write honestly about some of the stories behind 20 years of making programmes and, in particular, spending time with Jimmy Savile and the impact of discovering that he was a preda- tory serial sex offender.”
