INTRODUCTION

The Bookseller Buyer’s Guide Children’s Spring/Summer 2022

A preview of new titles published between February 2022–July 2022

Using the Buyer’s Guides

The titles listed in the Spring/Summer 2022 Buyer’s Guide are divided into categories, with sub-divisions according to format and age range where appropriate. Within each category, the entries are listed under the publishers’ imprints, which have been ordered alphabetically. All the books included

were submitted by publishers via the online database (Bookseller BuyersGuide.co.uk). Regardless of size, publishers were restricted to submitting 10 titles and/or series per category/imprint, and given a 30-word limit to describe each title. If a title is an audiobook or has an audio edition, it is stated in the title’s metadata. Other formats are as

follows: hb (hardback); pb (paperback); tpb (trade paperback); pbo (paperback original); mmpb (mass-market paperback); eb (e-book).

I

f you have had even a cursory glance at The Bookseller’s children’s coverage over the past several years, you know that the sector is in a purple patch with a run of record and near-record years since the mid-2010s. The upward swing took a bit of a tumble during year one of the pandemic, but rebounded strongly with nearly £378m in children’s books rung through the tills in 2021. That’s the fifth best-ever children’s annual haul through Nielsen BookScan, all the more impressive as the year was missing 10 weeks of lockdown data. Driving this is a seismic shift, in 2021 the Preschool

and Picture Books category for the first time ever outsold Children’s and Young Adult Fiction (£141.2m to £131m). A bit of this may be down to the “shopping chart” trend of the pandemic which benefits big brands—of which picture books has plenty, led by the mighty Julia Donaldson (responsible for nearly £1 in every £10 spent on picture books last year). But the

sector has also had a huge upsurge of newer voices and older hands having breakthrough years including author/illustrator teams such as Rachel Bright/Chris Chatterton, Joseph Coelho/Fiona Lumbers and Dawn McMillan/Ross Kinnaird.
