Picture books
Julia Donaldson ( 8), Sara Ogilvie (illus) Gozzle Macmillan Children’s Books, 27th, £12.99, HB, 9781529076417
A new Julia Donaldson is always something to be excited about, and for this nature-inspired tale she has once again collaborated with Ogilvie, co-creator of The Detective Dog. The story is about a bear who becomes an unwilling father when an egg that lands outside his door hatches a sweet little gosling. When Gozzle meets a flock of geese and flies away Bear realises he misses having her around. This isn’t a rhyming story, like The Detective Dog, but it is a sweet reminder about what being part of a family really means.

Patricia Forde ( 6), Sarah Warburton (illus) Letters to a Monster Bloomsbury, 13th, £12.99, HB, 9781526615800 An indignant little girl writes a letter to the monster under the bed, threatening to call THE MONSTER POLICE if her new visitor doesn’t clear off. The aggrieved Monster writes back and a series of letters go back and forth. The monster tells increasingly tall tales of adventures in woods, mountains and ghost ships, until the letters suddenly stop, and Sophie realises she wants him to be her friend after all. A funny and ingenious story about friendship in unlikely places.
Fiction 5-9 2 12
Katya Balen ( 2), Gill Smith (illus) The Appletree Animal Agency Walker Books, 6th, £10.99, HB, 9781529519181 Animal-lover Mattie is desperate to have her own dog but her dad has always said no, so when a vet and animal rescuer comes to town, Mattie and her friend Zoe are keen to help. They rescue a runaway ferret, stop a greedy goat and manage to find the perfect owner for every animal in their care. With its adorably determined heroine and animal escapades, this is a heartwarming start to a series that Walker is pitching at readers looking for a modern-day Dick King-Smith. For 7+.
Fiction 9-12
Jessie Burton ( 1) Hidden Treasure Bloomsbury, 13th, £14.99, HB, 9781526604569
In the new children’s novel from Burton, two children, both of whom have experienced loss, find halves of a treasure given up by the river. When the pieces are reunited it holds the power to give back to them one of the most precious things they have ever lost. But should that power be used? Hidden Treasure is a poignant, page- turning adventure story that is wise about family, friendship and love, and is the kind of literary middle-grade that appeals to readers of Katherine Rundell and Anna James.
