Wales shines in March with two top picks

March’s Book of the Month by a successful Welsh-language author sits, among the many familiar faces featured in this preview, as a reminder of the importance of supporting regional talent

W 10

elsh talent will be under the spotlight in March with two brilliant books

– one for the youngest of readers, and the other for the YA/crossover market – heading for the shelves. The first, Sleep Tight, Disgusting Blob (PRH Children’s) is a bril- liantly sweet and funny story about a little monstrous creature who is going to bed, and the other, Vanishing Edge by Zillah Bethell (Firefly Press), is a coming-of-age story about two teenage girls in Port Talbot. While on the surface these books have little in common apart from their authors’ Welsh connection, they are both a testament to Wales’ dedication to creating outstanding children’s literature.

Vanishing Edge is the first in a

short series of novels inspired by life in contemporary Wales, supported by the Books Council of Wales (future titles are coming from Emma Smith-Barton and Patience Agbabi). Without the support from the Books Council, this book may not exist. Huw Aaron has built up a hugely

successful career making chil- dren’s books, alongside a YouTube draw-along channel in Welsh. When his deal with Penguin Random House was announced he thanked Puffin but did not want anyone to forget where he comes from, saying: “I must also add how indebted I am to all in the wonderful Welsh-language publishing world who have supported my career thus far and given my imagination wings.
