Keep the faith: religious sales continue to ascend

A

t The Bookseller’s M arketing & P ublicity Conference at the end of June,

NielsenIQ’s Philip Stone highlighted the Bible category as being a small pocket within Non-Fiction that is experiencing something of a purple patch, and suggested that the growth of religious influencers on TikTok might be partially responsible. It is something that we high-

lighted ourselves at this same point in 2025, though we attrib- uted most of the growth to the election of Pope Leo XIV in May last year. At the time, NielsenIQ BookData’s Religion category had shown growth of 2.7% in the first

four months of the year, before accelerating to 10.1% growth in the two months immediately following that first sighting of white smoke above the Sistine Chapel. As Stone pointed out, that level

of growth was sustained across the remainder of 2025, with the Religion category ending 2025 with a sales figure of £27.9m, an all-time best (at least since records began) and up 10.5% compared with 2024. This growth is even more impressive when put in stark contrast with the rest of Non-Fiction, which saw sales drop by 3.5% in the same period. The Bibles & Liturgy sub- category was the biggest

Across the first half of the year, the Religion category is up 7.6%, putting it on course to deliver £30m if this increase can be sustained
