Return to sender: Virginia Evans reclaims indie number one

REPORTING Alex Call

fter a gap of a week, Virginia Evans’ ( 2) Women’s Prize- winning novel The Correspondent has

returned to the top of the Independent Bookshop Top 20, according to the latest data from NielsenIQ BookData. It moves up to the position previ- ously held by Rabih Alameddine

whose 2015 novel An Unnecessary Woman made it to the top thanks to a slot in the ShelterBox Book Club – thus no surprise to see its spike last just one week. Not all subscription boxes report

2

into NielsenIQ’s indie bookshop listing – but one that does and has had an impact this week is The Broken Binding. Thanks to their special edition, Malice by John Gwynne, first published in 2012, has appeared in second place in

Independent Bookshop Top 10 Data source NielsenIQ Book Data. Week ending 4th July 2026.

the Indie Top 20 this week. NielsenIQ does not reveal sales data for indie bookshops, but the hardback edition of the first book in Gwynne’s The Faithful and the Fallen series has sold 3,165 copies in the TCM in the past seven days, despite not having previously sold any copies since 2015. Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper

Volume 6, which has made it to the top of the UK-wide Top 50, falls a little short of that with the indies, taking up fourth place instead. It fares a little better than Dan Brown’s The Secret of Secrets – the latest Robert Langdon thriller is second in the TCM but fails to make a mark in the Indie Top 20.
