NEWS REVIEW
09 AWARDS & PRIZES Cunningham collects third Branford Boase
Chicken House m.d Barry Cunningham pictured has won the Branford Boase Award for the third time for editorial work on Beetle Boy by M G Leonard (Chicken House). Cunningham was presented with the award
for the outstanding début novel for children at Walker Books’ offices in London, along with Leonard and the book’s editor, Rachel Leyshon. The award’s organisers praised the title, about a boy and his beetle, for its “its humour, characters and plotting, and because of Leonard’s special understanding of her young audience”. Leonard studied entomology for almost a decade in preparation for the book. The other shortlisted books included Cogheart
by Peter Bunzl, edited by Rebecca Hill (Usborne); We are Giants by Amber Lee Dodd, edited by Niamh Mulvey (Quercus); and Little Bits of Sky by S E Durrant, edited by Kirsty Stansfield (Nosy
FINANCIAL RESULTS Quarto issues profit warning ahead of first-half results
The Quarto Group has issued a profits warning, admitting its original guidance for 2017 and beyond had been “set too high”. It also cited a “soft retail environment” for a “disappointing” first-half in advance of its interim results, which are out next month. The group emphasised too that it was transitioning to refocus on its core publishing business, resulting in its business becoming more weighted towards the second half of the year. Nevertheless, shares in the publisher fell 25% from 237.5p to 172.5p on the news. In March, Quarto issued market guidance

following the disposal of two of its businesses, Hong Kong-based Regent Publishing Services and Books & Gifts Direct Australia. However, the guidance used a publishing-only baseline for 2016 which did not reflect the benefit of $2.1m relating to the reduction in the amortisation of capitalised pre-publication costs, it said, meaning that the baseline for 2017 and beyond had been set too high. Quarto added that the tough retail climate was
also likely to impact on its interim results for the six months to 30th June 2017, set to be released on Tuesday 8th August.

Crow). The Bubble Boy by Stewart Foster, edited by Rachel Mann (Simon & Schuster) was also
nominated, along with Waterstones Children’s Book Prize-winner The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave, also edited by Leyshon for Chicken House. Leonard said she was “brimming over with
joy and delight” at the news and Cunningham, who famously discovered J K Rowling, described Leonard as “one of the best début authors I’ve ever come across”. He told The Bookseller that the Branford Boase, now in its 17th year, was important because it recognised the collaboration between author and editor: “We specialise in new writers at Chicken House and that first relationship between an editor and an author is like your first girlfriend or boyfriend in how it shapes you.” He praised how Leonard had bought to life the “wonderful natural world” and the “amazing ability of beetles”.

title was not included in the Hardback Non-Fiction chart for the week ending 24th June. It sold 1,790 copies, and should have been fifth in the list.
