108,766 units, back in April 2015. However, this is probably less a judgement on Hawkins’ appeal and more a sign of the fortunes of the e-book market. While in April two years ago “e” represented nearly 70% of The Girl on the Train’s total sales across all formats, in May 2017 Into the Water’s print volume hit 96,913 copies (and with a hard- back’s a.s.p. of more than £10), giving digital just a 25% slice of the all-format sales pie. In the time that readers have come to trust Hawkins as a writer worth spending a tenner on, they also appear to have begun to aban-

don their e-readers. The Handmaid’s Tale spent a third month in the ranking, but soared into its highest posi- tion yet: second place. Though the television adaptation only began on Channel 4 in the last weekend of May, it managed to hit the Weekly E-Book Rank- ing pole before the series had even begun—so it was no doubt racking up considerable sales throughout May. Aside from Into the Water, new hardback fiction titles had a great month in “e”, with Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Fate scoring fiſth place, Erin Kelly’s He Said/ She Said going straight into 12th, and Child’s short-story collec- tion No Middle Name hiting 19th place. ×
