N THE LEAST surprising news of 2017 to date, Paula Hawkins’ second title Into
the Water has sailed unchal- lenged into the Monthly E-Book Ranking number one spot for May. Though only those in the book trade who fell into a coma in January 2015 and have just come out of it will be unaware of the success of Hawkins’ psychological thriller début The Girl on the Train, it’s worth reiterating the title’s blister- ing record: it has sold a total of 2.4 million copies in print, racked up 29 weeks apiece in the Original and Mass-Market Fiction number one spots, and in digital, steamed to the top of the Monthly E-Book Ranking 13 times. In the last six months of 2016 alone, when it had been available on the virtual book- shelves for more than 18 months, it shiſted 300,000 units. So, no pressure then, Into the Water. The watery follow-up is off to a decent start, becoming one of the first e-books to shiſt more than 15,000 units in a calen- dar month this year (along with Penguin Random House
