Chandler becomes Bookseller news editor; Bayley joins Mark Chandler, previously senior reporter on The Bookseller, has been promoted to news editor, effective from Friday 7th May. He takes over the role from acting news editor Benedicte Page, who returns to her posi- tion as the publication’s deputy editor. Sian Bayley has been appointed to complete the news team as senior reporter, and will take up her post on Monday (10th May). Bayley joins from public service news agency The Local Democracy Reporting Service. She joins reporter Ruth Comerford and deputy news editor Heloise Wood.

Wartime memoir to William Collins Williams Collins has pre- empted political columnist Daniel Finkelstein’s memoir uncovering his family’s persecution during the Second World War. Love and Murder: A Memoir of My Family’s War tells of the experiences of his mother and father at the hands of Hitler and Stalin. Publishing director Arabella Pike pre-empted UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Toby Mundy at Aevitas Creative Management, for publica- tion in spring 2023.

PRH to publish Duchess of Sussex’s children’s book
Literary editors look to future after lockdown
M
eghan, Duchess of Sussex has written a children’s book
for Penguin Random House called The Bench, about the “special bond between father and son as seen through a mother’s eyes”. Inspired by her own husband
and son, the book captures the evolving and expanding relation- ship between fathers and sons and “reminds us of the many ways that love can take shape and be expressed in a modern family”, the publisher said. The book is illustrated by Caldecott-winning artist Christian Robinson. The Duchess explained:
“The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born. That poem became this story. Christian layered in

beautiful and ethereal watercol- our illustrations that capture the warmth, joy and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life “This representation was
particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens. My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the make-up, as much as it does with mine.” Puffin will release the book on 8th June 2021 in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa, while Random House Children’s Books will release it simultane- ously in the US. The author will also narrate the audiobook edition, to be released in the UK by Penguin Random House UK Audio.
