500th issue A matter of

trust

We're celebrating our 500th issue and, while almost everything has changed since issue one, our original purpose matters just as much today, writes managing editor Andrew Davies.

I

n October 1984, the very first issue of what was then called Kitchen Bedroom and Bathroom Review landed with a round-up of the Milan International Furniture Fair splashed across its front cover. It also featured a rather extraordinary story about a 'cheated' customer who had kidnapped their kitchen dealer. Looking back now, it was a wonderfully odd combination but it also told you almost everything you needed to know about the magazine's ambitions. A publication dedicated solely to independent kitchen, bedroom and bathroom retailers was something genuinely new. And from day one it wanted to cover everything that mattered to the people running those businesses, from the latest thinking in design to the everyday realities of serving customers (not that kidnapping happened everyday but you get my point).

It wasn't simply a magazine about the industry, it was a magazine for the

people in it. Now, almost 42 years later, we've reached our 500th issue. A lot has changed in that time. We've had different owners, different editors,

different offices and countless different contributors. We've lived through recessions, financial crashes, Brexit, Covid, supply chain crises and more recently the arrival of AI. The magazine itself has evolved too, growing far beyond print into websites, podcasts, newsletters, events and awards. But one thing hasn't changed.
