FAA UAS Symposium is Going Virtual


Due to ongoing concerns caused by


the COVID-19 pandemic, and for the health and safety of the unmanned aviation community, the FAA UAS Symposium Team has decided to host the 5th Annual FAA UAS Symposium virtually instead of in-person in Baltimore.


Recognizing the value of this symposium for driving engagement between the commercial UAS industry and the FAA, the FAA UAS Symposium Team is confirming a series of virtual events that will address the important content already planned for this year’s program.


The first will take place in early summer with a focus on UTM and international UAS integration. The second will take place in late summer with a focus on updates to the Integration Pilot Program (IPP) and public safety operations. Additional details will be shared with the community as soon as they are finalized.


If you are already registered for the 5th Annual FAA UAS Symposium, you will receive a separate message in the coming weeks to confirm your options for participation in the virtual events.


If you were selected as a speaker for the 5th Annual FAA UAS Symposium, you will receive a separate message from the FAA UAS Symposium Team’s Industry Education team to confirm your participation and any schedule changes. As the FAA team works to shift how to gather this year, it also acknowledges and applauds the many first responders, remote pilots, and commercial partners who are safely using UAS to respond to this crisis, as well as the manufacturers who have shifted their capacity to support production of critical personal protective equipment.

FLIR Wins $20.6 Million Contract to Provide Black Hornet Nano-UAV Systems for U.S. Army’s Soldier Borne Sensor Program


FLIR Systems Inc. recently announced it won an additional $20.6 million contract from the U.S. Army to deliver its FLIR Black Hornet® 3 Personal Reconnaissance Systems (PRS). The advanced nano-unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will support platoon-level and small unit-level surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities as part of the Army’s Soldier Borne Sensor (SBS) program.


Extremely light, nearly silent, and with a flight time up to 25 minutes, the combat-proven, pocket-sized FLIR Black Hornet transmits live video and HD still images back to the operator. Its information feed provides soldiers with immediate covert situational awareness to help them perform missions more effectively. FLIR has delivered

more than 12,000 Black Hornet nano-UAVs to defense and security forces worldwide. In January 2019, the U.S. Army awarded FLIR an initial $39.7 million contract for Black Hornet 3s to support the SBS program. The company is currently delivering those systems for fielding across the force.
