Late Hurricane

Late in the hurricane season on Nov. 10, 2022, Hurricane Nicole made landfall in Florida only six weeks after Ian while some regions were still recovering. It was the sixth hurricane of the season, which included two Cat 4 hurricanes. This is only the fourth recorded year to produce three Atlantic hurricanes in November.

Studies such as a 2021 MIT analysis indicate that Atlantic hurricane seasons are increasing in intensity in recent decades. And overall, hurricanes are our most destructive natural disasters. So search-and-rescue assistance from the private sector during hurricanes is likely to become increasingly important.

As Hurricane Ian left a path of destruction, some Southwest Florida islands were left without a route to the mainland. FLNG aviators delivered much-need supplies. (Photo: Pfc.
