Army Expands ICARUS Device Airworthiness Release to Include all UH-60 Black Hawks
ICARUS Devices recently announced that the Army has expanded the ICARUS Devices Airworthiness Release fleetwide to include every UH-60L and UH/HH- 60M Black Hawk helicopter. For the last year, multiple training and operational units have been using Icarus with a unit-specific AWR. Now every unit flying the mighty Black Hawk can use this lightweight, game-changing device.
The Black Hawk is the workhorse of Army Aviation, serving in the Air Assault, MEDEVAC and General Support roles. Former

trainers the ability to simulate degraded visual environments (DVE) in the aircraft. ICARUS brings simulator-level control to the aircraft, allowing users to dial in any visibility for dynamic scenario-based training.
For Army aviators, the ICARUS improves training in three big ways. First during Inadvertent
Instrument Meteorological
Conditions (IIMC) training, ICARUS simulates a rapid reduction in visibility to evoke the Startle Effect and force an emergency transition to instrument flying. Second, the ICARUS device enhances IFR proficiency by mimicking real-world weather and adding training value throughout a practice instrument approach. Finally, by replicating marginal visibility conditions, all important weather decision-making skills can be put to the test during planning and in flight, crucial for pilot-in-command checkrides.

Dozens of military units, colleges, flight schools, private operators, LEOs, HEMS and federal agencies use the device, with nearly 300 devices flying globally in everything from a Cessna 172 to a CH- 47 Chinook.
