Choose the right resources for early development
At this stage of development, less is often more. Babies benefit most from simple, open-ended and sensory-rich materials that invite curiosity. Think:
• Treasure baskets filled with natural objects • Mirrors for self-recognition and visual stimulation • Soft books, musical toys and textured fabrics

Promote consistency and connection through routines
A calm and predictable routine is essential for a baby’s emotional wellbeing. Key routines like sleep, feeding and play should be consistent and adapted to individual needs. Supporting this can be as simple as using the same sleep song daily, having personal baskets for comfort items and ensuring regular communication with families.
5
Prioritise safety and quality
Safety is the foundation of adequate care. Ensure all furniture and equipment you purchase meets UK safety standards and regularly conduct risk assessments (all early years furniture and equipment at YPO is thoroughly tested and built to last).
Consider filling your space with anti-tip furniture and rounded corners to avoid your little ones injuring themselves. Look out for fire-retardant soft furnishings and ensure that there are clear lines of sight across the room to make way for a quick exit in an emergency.
We can work with leading suppliers you know and love to help you plan, project manage and create spaces tailored to your nursery’s individual needs.

Build strong partnerships with families
Families are a baby’s first educators, and creating a space that reflects their home life and values can help ease transitions and strengthen trust. Allow parents to share routines and preferences and ask them if they can provide family photos from home for display. Give daily updates using apps or journals to offer peace of mind for parents and showcase all the lovely things their baby gets up to. A good partnership fosters security for the child and builds confidence for the parent.
7
Review, reflect, refresh
Even the most well-designed baby rooms need regular reflection. What works for one group of babies might need adapting for another. Consider involving your team in regular audits, gathering feedback from parents, and staying up to date with best practices.
