Ready, set, BUILD!

When it comes to early childhood development, the right toys can make a huge difference. As early years educators, we know how beneficial construction toys can be for the little ones. They support essential skills like problem-solving, fine motor development and early STEM thinking. But did you know there are even more benefits to be absorbed when you introduce magnets into the mix?

The benefits

Magnetic construction products are perfect for toddlers just beginning to explore the world of shapes, structures and how things fit together. They’re great for helping introduce the concepts of polarity and how forces work. As toddlers experiment, they discover whether two pieces snap together or push apart, encouraging problem-solving and critical thinking.

As well as being fantastic physics introducers, magnetic construction toys help children build hand strength and coordination, which is essential for tasks like writing, feeding, and getting dressed. Children will practice control and precision as they connect and separate the pieces.

Construction toys are fantastic for inspiring creativity and imaginative thinking! Children will love building all sorts of wonderful structures in different shapes and sizes. Plus, they’re perfect for encouraging social and cooperative play, and it’s lovely to see tots team up, chat and figure out together how to assemble their chosen creations!

Want some inspiration? Try these activities... 2 2. Baby builders

There’s something truly special about building your very first 3D shape. With a bit of help, toddlers can create simple cubes or pyramids using just a few tiles. The excitement on their faces is priceless when their structure stands tall (and doesn’t fall over!). These early builds boost confidence, encourage persistence, and lay the groundwork for spatial awareness and engineering skills.

1. Rainbow stackers

Turn learning colours into a hands-on adventure! Invite toddlers to sort magnetic tiles by colour and stack them into tall towers. It’s a simple yet satisfying activity that introduces colour recognition, sorting, and early categorisation. Watch their faces light up as they proudly point to their rainbow creations — a perfect mix of learning and fun!
