West Exe Nursery School, Exeter
What activities did you use the products
for? We used the books for our story times.
Did the children enjoy using the product? We have a mixed group of 15 children aged 36 months to 55 months. We enjoyed the stories and they are going to be a useful resource for our nursery.
We use thrive across the setting and so we are always thinking about emotions and how to regulate our big feelings. These books deal with themes that children, especially our older ones, who are working through the power and identity stage of emotional development. We will keep them as special books which we can use to help with our older children’s higher thinking skills about the world outside.
The younger children may not get the social stories behind them, but most were able to engage in the story, and showed interest in the pictures
What activities did you use the products for? We put it out in child-led play and the children squealed
with delight when we introduced him and modelled how to make his mouth work. Most of our puppets are animals and they were really excited to play with this one and quickly used it to chase each other with.
Did the children enjoy using the product? The ability to make its mouth move means that it
supports fine motor development, and I can imagine that we will use him in our emotions group-times as he is very emotive with his wide mouth and big eyes. He is bright and has lots of different textures on him.
We would give him 7/10.
We wouldn’t recommend him specifically to other nurseries as he is just a puppet, without any other features, but puppets are always an important part of the nursery class room.

How would you rate the product out of 10? The Jar of Happiness
Lovely easy read, lovely pictures, led onto a lovely discussion about what makes us happy and lots could verbalise ideas around this. Probably the most accessible book of the three, in terms of the ideas behind it. 9/10
That’s NOT how to do it We really loved this one and felt that it is relevant to a key theme in some of our children’s learning at this stage. They are recognising difference and often think that their way is the only way. This addressed the idea of broadening ideas of how to do something and fostering acceptance of others. Lovely pictures. 9/10
Rabbityness
Such a touching book. We feel that this could be used for any child experiencing loss, or even for children whose family are affected by depression or mental health issues. A very gentle and beautiful book. 9/10
