Creating galaxy space rocks

Children use everyday language to talk about size weight, time and distance. Why not get them to create their own space rocks using an assortment of different stones or rocks? This is a fantastic opportunity to combine imagination through crafts and problem solving by sorting the rocks based on size, weight or shape.

1. Prepare the work space with white paper or splash mats 2. Ask the children to collect an assortment of different rocks from outdoors 3. Portion out Acrylic or Readymix Paints (we used Acrylic but Readymix will be more washable)

4. Use a Toothbrush to flick the paints onto the rocks 5. Leave to dry and you have your own Galaxy Space Rocks

Counting space rocks

This is a great opportunity to create an environment that invites them to explore textures, group objects based on weight and develop their problem-solving skills through play.

Encourage mathematical thinking and use questions like; How would you sort these? Can you find this many, what would happen if? Our little ones enjoyed grouping and balancing these small foil rocks.
