will destroy all non-heat resistant viruses including SARs-Cov-2 virus contamination that may be on bedpans and urine bottles. Independent testing identified that the flusher disinfectors removed more than 99.99 per cent of C. difficile spores.10, 11
Summary
Both flusher disinfectors and macerators use energy and water in varying amounts, while the former typically has a marginally higher acquisition cost, requires routine chemical refills and performance validation. Flusher disinfectors have been estimated to be six times more cost efficient over the product lifetime.9
manually or by using a touch-free operation to avoid contamination of the exterior. The used bedpan is then placed in the flusher disinfector. The door is closed, and the item is emptied, flushed, cleaned, and disinfected, without further caregiver intervention. Automated operation features are designed to help reduce the risk of cross- contamination while delivering effective cleaning and disinfection results. The disinfection phase is controlled by the pre-set A0
value – time and temperature.
Each time the flusher disinfectors are used, they perform a validated self-cleaning and disinfection cycle, ensuring that the interior of the machine is disinfected. Items are placed in standard or bespoke
racks inside the machine depending on the different sizes of bedpans and other items, which facilitates a thorough cleaning by the fixed and rotating steam nozzles in the chamber. The pipe system disinfection feature disinfects the entire pipe and nozzle system at the end of each cycle. Effective cleaning and disinfection are critical to limiting pathogen exposure, with the option to record or track disinfection processes, offering traceability for a facility’s disinfection operations as part of their infection prevention and control strategy.
Planning a safe sluice room Arjo has outlined four cornerstones of an efficient sluice room to promote safe practice:
1. Soiled or dirty area
This is an area set aside for soiled goods, kept separate from the clean area. It usually consists of a bench or a stainless steel discharge table. There should also be a lockable cupboard or cabinet for storing chemicals or disinfectants in the soiled area of the sluice or utility room.

2. Hand washing station The hand wash station should be strategically located, easily accessible, equipped with a mixer tap, and include accessories such as liquid soap dispensers, disposable paper towels, and a wastepaper bin. Taps are a source of potential contamination by hands; therefore, automatic taps or those with elbow levers are preferred.
3. Flusher Disinfector Soiled goods are placed into the flusher disinfector – emptying, flushing, cleaning, and disinfecting the receptacles without further intervention by the caregiver. Depending on model type, Arjo flusher disinfectors can be freestanding to provide correct loading height, wall- mounted to enable underfloor cleaning, and under-table to free up workspace.
4. Clean area The caregiver will locate the disinfected bedpans in the clean storage area, ensuring that appropriate hand hygiene is followed at all times during the workflow process – clean hands on clean goods.
Standards and Testing The Arjo flusher disinfector range complies with the requirements of EN ISO 15883-3 20 as thermal disinfectors for human waste containers. The flusher disinfectors
