STEP COMMUNICATIONS

Home Environment. On 6 July we attended UK Care Week at NEC Birmingham, where we met with exhibitors, attended discussions, and caught up with The Care Home Environment contributors past, present, and future. Of particular interest was a keynote by Adam Purnell and his colleagues from the Institute of Health and Social Care Management, who spoke passionately about their People Plan for Social Care – a “revolutionary document” according to Mr Purnell, written “by the sector for the sector.” The plan makes an ambitious 59 recommendations, but not all of these are aimed at government. As Mr Purnell put it: “If we want change in social care, we need to actually realise that we need to do some of it ourselves.” Later that month, as temperatures rose (and kept on rising) we visited Maplewood Court in Maidstone, Kent – Oakland Care’s new 72-bed luxury care home, where we enjoyed a tour of the two-storey building’s impressive facilities. We chatted with Richard Dooley, Oakland Care’s development director, and Phil Holding, managing director of Horizon Construction, about the construction of the new home, the reasons why Oakland chose the site, sustainability and Oakland’s carbon neutral status, and much more besides. You can read my full report on p 31.

In early August, and on yet another challengingly hot day, we attended the opening ceremony of Chartwell House in Broadstairs, on the East Kent coast. While Chartwell House still has a couple of months

of building and interior work to go, the Boutique Care Homes team are confident of completing soon and, hopefully, welcoming Chartwell’s first residents before Christmas. In the meantime, on the evidence of the newly launched marketing suite, Chartwell House will be a luxurious addition to the growing Boutique portfolio. We are looking forward to featuring an in-depth report on Chartwell House in a future issue.

Finally, again in early August, we

enjoyed speaking with a characteristically forthright Professor Martin Green OBE of Care England about the COVID-19 Inquiry, how the NHS ‘abandoned’ social care during the pandemic, and the future of the Health and Social Care Levy (if indeed it has one). Echoing Adam Purnell, Professor Green insists that the social care sector “needs to try and craft its own solutions.” You can read the full interview on p 15.

As autumn approaches, there is plenty to look forward to for the remainder of 2022, not least Care Show 2022, which returns to NEC Birmingham on 12-13 October, and where The Care Home Environment will be partnering with the new Design, Build & Environments theatre. I hope you enjoy the issue.
